Cricket heats up

FRESH from the bye the day before Yarram & District welcomed Ex Stu dents on Sunday January 22 to the Yarram Recreation Reserve for the first time. Ex Students liked the look of the wicket so much they decided to bat first but again for the second time in weekend found them selves in early trouble at 2/35. This time Matt Dyke was still in and James Pryde was yet to bat but the pressure brought by Yar ram’s bowlers was certainly giving the bats men problems. With the score on 6/109 Ex Students would have been thinking about a score of 150+ until Ant Scott came back on to bowl and ripped through the lower order as Ex Students lost their last 4 wickets for 0 runs. A fired up Ant Scott who is bowling quick and aggressive at the moment claimed 5/24 for his troubles as Ex Students were dis missed for 117. Yarram & District are a confident team who play very aggressive cricket and never die wondering but when the Sharks started to circle and had the home team in massive trouble at 5/27 the Pelicans had to regroup and tick the scoreboard over a little slower than they usually do. For the second time in 2 days the Ex Students bowlers applied the pressure and today were able to take regular wickets. The game continued to get tighter and tighter and when Griffin Underwood was dismissed for 13 with the score on 8/100 it was anyone’s guess as to who would win. The cool and experienced head of Jeremy Babb got the home team over the line though with a well compiled 27 under immense pres sure which meant his team jumps Ex Stu dents into 2nd spot and potentially into a po sition to host a home final this season. Score board summary for the Pelicans Bowling: Anthony Scott was the best for the home side with 5/24 with Daniel O’keefe chipping in with 2/28. In the field Daniel O’keefe took three catches, Dylan Rash one and J Babb 1. Jack Moore secured one stumping. Yarram v Gormandale January 28 GORMANDALE made the trip to Yarram this week and got a little nostalgic for some of the older players who got to visit their old ground on the way over. Arriving the Tigers were a little flat but winning the toss and batting first seemed to spark the away team as they got off to a decent start. When Matt Hibbs arrived at the crease with the score on 55 not even he would have thought he would be seeing the rest of the innings out but that he did as Hibbs was able to bring up his maiden TDCA A Grade hundred and finished the innings 120* from 106 balls. The really good signs for Gormandale was that Hibbs was able to bat well in partnerships throughout the in nings as Gormandale, who only had 1 win to their name for the year, were able to amass 250 after 50 overs for the loss of 5 wickets. Yarram & District weren’t expecting Gor mandale to notch up such a score but hav ing looked at the wicket which was a batting paradise the Pelicans still went in confident. Gormandale set the tone early as Adam J Moore .................................................. 12 D Rash........................................................4 D O’Keefe .................................................1 J Swift ........................................................0 B Layton ....................................................4 AW Scott................................................ 23 M Garland .............................................. 13 G Underwood ......................................13 J Babb.................................... not out 27 B Askew................................. not out 6

Brady got a wicket with the first ball of the innings and although superstars Dylan Rash and Ant Scott fell relatively cheaply the Peli cans continued to hang in and tick the score over. It got a lot tighter than the score line suggests due to some excellent batting from Griffin Underwood who made a very good 51* from 56 balls but in the end the first in nings score was just too much and the Pel icans were bowled out in the 45th over for 183 with Adam Brady the chief destroyer for Gormandale taking 6/25. This match has the potential to shape the top 4 as a win here would have kept Yar ram & District in 2nd spot on the ladder. The good news for Yarram though is their wicket is simply superb and there will be big runs scored on that ground for the rest of the year and the years to come. Gormandale drove home wondering where this type of form had been and Matt Hibbs departed knowing that he was the first batsman to make a hundred on the new Yarram Recreation Reserve turf wicket which is something nobody can ever take away from him. B Grade Yarram had the bye Jan 22 Yarram defeated Gormandale In a quick-fire match Yarram had Gorman dale bowled out for 46 thanks to the bowling efforts of Coulthard who was on fire with 6 wickets for just 3 runs. Swift 2/17 and Crawford 2/8 were online also. Griffith and Milne then began the run chase Griffiths was still there when the win ning runs were hit with 30 runs, Milne was bowled by Sculock for 2 and Qugley was not out 13. Final score Gormandale all out for 46 defeated by Yarram 1 for 48. C Grade Yarram & District 2/296 def Imperials 9/64 Nick Milne and Matt Earles blasted the Pelicans into a winning position with 142 and 123 respectively. Earles retiring on 123 brought Jenkins to the crease. Jenkins add ed four more runs before being bowled by Shankland. Staley faced two balls scoring one run before time was called on the innings. Pelicans then got to work to make the Im perials stay on the new Yarram turf wicket a short one. Saunders taking 4/5 from 6 overs, Thom as 1/2 from 5 overs with teammates Cleary, Smallwood, Becker and Hyland all chipping in with 1 wicket each as well. Jenkins took three catches and Collins one.
